Scripture Reference

Judges 3:12Now the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord. So the Lord strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord. 13 And he gathered to himself the sons of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and defeated Israel, and they possessed the city of the palm trees. 14 The sons of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years. 15 But when the sons of Israel cried to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for them, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. And the sons of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab. 16 Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length, and he bound it on his right thigh under his cloak.

1) Surrender your Weaknesses to God
In this text, God raised up Ehud to overcome the evil king Eglon. Ehud was a left-handed man, and while that might not be a big deal today, in his day it was seen as a handicap. This handicap became useful as Ehud made a dagger, and placed it on his right thigh. When a person presents himself to a king and has a sword or dagger on his left thigh, it means that he is coming with the intent to battle. When a person presents himself to a king and has a sword or dagger on his right thigh, it means he is coming in peace. Any right handed man would of had a hard time planning to do what Ehud is about to do. So although Ehud had a weakness of being left-handed, he was able to surrender that to God for a great purpose.
Let's look at how God overcomes our weaknesses:
A) God uses the weak. 1 Corinthians 1:27 - but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong.
B) God's strength overcomes our weaknesses 2 Corinthians 12:9-10And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10 Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.
A youth pastor friend of mine once told me a powerful truth: "Do not think for a second that the power of God is limited or weakened by His use of weak individuals."
Questions for Reflection
What weaknesses are you allowing as an excuse to keep God from using you? What bad things are there in your past that could be used to encourage and help others that are fighting those same battles today? Can you say with Paul that you are content with weaknesses?
